As I stepped off of the ladder, sweat dripping down my back from the hot African sun, I noticed a little girl, no more than four years old, standing off by herself across the school yard.
I took off my paint covered gloves, walked over to her and, in my broken Swahili, I asked what was wrong, as all of the other children were already in their classrooms and settled in for the day.
Through our minute conversation I was able to determine that her name was Mary and that this was her first day of school. After placing her in the doorway and reassuring her that everything would be okay, I walked back over to the mural that I had been working on: just as I was about to climb back on the ladder, I noticed a little figure standing next to me.
As I walked her into the room for the final time, her little hand clutching onto mine, I was brought back to my first day of school when my mom held my hand and walked me into my classroom.
Halfway across the world in Mlangarini, Tanzania and a number of years later, I was walking a little girl to her first day of school just like my mom had done with me. My transitional moment seemed to last forever when I was going through it, but looking back on it I feel as if everything has gone by quickly.
Leaving Mary and the villagers of Mlangarini behind, was one of the hardest things that I have ever done.
I formed an unbreakable bond with the people in the village. As our bus drove away down the dust clouded dirt college application essay on community service, I held onto that little hand through the opening of the window, and as the salty tears ran down my face, I realized just how lucky I was to have been able to meet Mary. Through our friendship, I discovered more about myself than I ever imagined. While this whole experience may seem insignificant, watching Mary grow and learn for the four weeks that I was there taught me the value of reaching out when someone needs help.
As I felt the little hand start to slip away and I looked down into the big brown eyes, full of tears, College application essay on community service wondered if I would ever see this amazing little girl again.
